Ahırlı Merkez Mosque: A Historical Place of Worship in Konya

Ahırlı Merkez Mosque: A Historical Place of Worship in Konya

Ahırlı Merkez Mosque, also known as İlyas Fakih Mosque, is located in the Ahırlı district of Konya. The Mosque was built in the tradition of a wooden mosque and has survived to the present day after some repairs, replacements, and expansions.

Built in the 19th century, the mosque originally belonged to the architectural tradition of wooden hypostyle mosques. These mosques are characterized by their roofs supported by rows of columns. Over time, the mosque underwent renovations and expansions, adapting to the needs of the growing congregation. Notably, the original flat roof was replaced with a tiled one, offering better protection from the elements.

Constructed in 1959, the minaret features a double balcony design, a distinctive architectural element. Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by a beautifully adorned double-winged entrance door, showcasing the mosque's commitment to aesthetics.

Divided into three north-south oriented sections, or naves, it provides ample space for worshippers. Two rows of five columns each line the hall, creating a sense of order and structure.

The Ahırlı Merkez Mosque serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural landmark, a testament to the town's rich heritage.
