Seljuk Legacy Rises Again at Altınapa Dam

Seljuk Legacy Rises Again at Altınapa Dam

Altınapa Inn, a remarkable Seljuk-era structure in Konya, has once again come into view after years beneath the waters of the Altınapa Dam. First submerged following the dam’s construction in the 1960s, the historic inn became fully visible in 2017 as water levels receded, standing resilient despite decades of exposure to natural conditions.

Built in 1201 by Şemseddin Altunapa, one of the prominent commanders of the Anatolian Seljuk State, the inn once served as an important stop along regional routes. However, it was inundated when the Altınapa Dam was constructed on Meram Stream to provide irrigation and drinking water. For many years, the structure remained hidden beneath the water, only partially emerging during dry winters when rainfall and snowfall were limited. As precipitation levels declined in recent years, the water gradually withdrew, and in 2017 the inn became completely visible.

Constructed of finely cut stone and reinforced with durable Khorasan mortar, Altınapa Inn has withstood nearly eight centuries of history. Despite prolonged submersion and changing environmental conditions, the structure continues to stand as a testament to Seljuk architecture and engineering.

Residents of the nearby Küçükmuhsine and Ulumuhsine neighborhoods recall stories passed down from their elders, who once traveled through the area on horseback. During harsh winters marked by heavy snow, rain, or blizzards, travelers would seek shelter at the inn, waiting for safer conditions before continuing their journey at first light.
