UCLG and Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay met with students of the Department of Turkology at Nouakchott University in Mauritania, where he was present for the UCLG Africa General Assembly. Welcomed with great enthusiasm by the students, Mayor Altay stated that he was deeply impressed by what he saw and said, “Türkiye is a great and strong country. The Turkish language is also an important language worldwide. Your intention to learn it and to conduct academic studies in this field is truly valuable.”
Providing students with information about Konya’s deep-rooted civilizational past and cultural heritage, Mayor Altay expressed his great pleasure in being together with students in Mauritania who are interested in the Turkish language and culture.
Mayor Altay also added that students to be selected by the Embassy of Türkiye in Mauritania will be hosted in Konya with the support of the Metropolitan Municipality.
During the visit, a Mauritanian student named Yuma recited the Turkish National Anthem.
SISTER CITY PROTOCOL SIGNED WITH THE MUNICIPALITY OF NOUAKCHOTT
As part of Mayor Altay’s visit to Mauritania, a sister city protocol was also signed with the Municipality of Nouakchott.
Speaking before the signing ceremony, Mayor Altay emphasized that Mauritania is a very valuable country for Türkiye, stating, “This is a very important Islamic land. Konya is also an important Islamic city. Hopefully, this signature will be a very important step in strengthening brotherhood.”
Following the speeches, Mayor Altay and President Malick signed the protocol that established Konya and Nouakchott as sister cities.
