Altay: “Together, we can realize our vision of building fairer and more sustainable cities”

The President of the United Cities and Local Governments World Organization and the Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, Uğur İbrahim Altay, attended the Executive Board Meeting of the UCLG Latin America Regional Organization held in Costa Rica.

Speaking at the meeting attended by mayors from member countries of FLACMA and numerous local and regional representatives in Costa Rica, President Altay emphasized the importance of unity within the municipal movement, particularly during this complex period the world is going through.

Mayor Altay, reminding the attendees that he participated not only as the President of UCLG but also as the President of the Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB), which encompasses nearly 1,200 member municipalities from 30 different countries, continued his speech with the following words:

“Today, we are gathered here not only as representatives of different cultures and societies transcending geographical boundaries but also as members of FLACMA and TDBB. Although FLACMA and TDBB operate in different geographical regions, in a globalizing world, local issues often intersect on the same plane. Regardless of changing resources and boundaries, the sole need of local governments is to construct a fairer and more sustainable city. Within this context, it is possible to enhance the relationships between our organizations based on mutual cooperation and experience sharing. Issues such as population growth, urbanization, climate change, and social inequalities affect everyone not only in specific regions but also globally.”
