Konya Hosts Inaugural Granfondo Cycling Race

Konya, named the 2026 European Cycling Capital by the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES), continues to host major international cycling events.

Organized for the first time by Konya Metropolitan Municipality, the Granfondo Road Cycling Race brought together 565 amateur and professional cyclists from Konya, across Türkiye, and abroad on the same course.

The race started in Meram Vineyards, with the opening given by Deputy Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Murat Koru, Turkish Cycling Federation Vice President for Road Cycling Metin Cengiz, Turkish Cycling Federation Board Member Kenan Güler, and former Turkish Cycling Federation President Erol Küçükbakırcı.

Following the start, cyclists competed on two routes created in central Konya—a 62.6-kilometer short course and a 94.9-kilometer long course. Passing through the city’s historic landmarks and natural scenery, the race offered participants a memorable riding experience.

Cyclists who traveled from outside the city said they greatly enjoyed riding through Konya’s scenic surroundings, highlighting the city’s wide, well-maintained roads.

Participants also noted that Konya fully deserves its title as the 2026 European Cycling Capital. They expressed their hope that similar races would continue in the future and thanked everyone involved in organizing the event.

Holding the title of 2026 European Cycling Capital, Konya has strengthened its reputation as a cycling destination in recent years by hosting a wide range of prestigious events, from international track cycling championships to road races.
