Beyşehir Boosts Tourism with Nature and Historical Heritage

Beyşehir Boosts Tourism with Nature and Historical Heritage

Beyşehir is situated on a fertile plain within a basin-like landscape, much of which is occupied by the lake itself. The Beyşehir Lake Basin plays a vital role in the region’s tourism, standing out for its historical depth and natural beauty. With its diverse wildlife, islands, sandy shores, caves, and rich vegetation, it is considered one of the most striking natural areas in Türkiye.

Combining history, culture, and exceptional natural scenery, Beyşehir also holds an important place in Anatolia’s heritage, with a human presence stretching back roughly 10,000 years. One of the earliest known settlements in the region is Erbaba Mound, which dates back to the Neolithic period around 8,000 years ago.

The region later came under Hittite influence and preserves remarkable monumental remains such as those at Eflatunpınar and Fasıllar. It also hosts significant historical sites including the remains of Kubadabad Palace, once the summer capital of the Seljuks, the Eşrefoğlu Complex from the Anatolian beyliks period, as well as Kız Castle, Yaka Monastery, and Hacı Akif Island, all of which contribute to its unique cultural landscape.

Beyşehir’s culinary tradition is another reflection of Anatolia’s rich gastronomic heritage, offering a wide range of distinctive dishes, ingredients, and cooking techniques. The region is especially known for its fish-based cuisine, while traditional Konya dishes such as Arabaşı soup, Bamya, Tutmaç, Etliekmek, and Bıçakarası are also commonly enjoyed as part of its local flavor.

Nearly every year in July and August, the Beyşehir Lake Festival brings the area to life. As the largest freshwater lake in Türkiye, Beyşehir Lake has been protected as a national park since 1993. Visitors can experience its unspoiled natural environment and fresh air, enjoy picnic and beach areas, camp, fish, and take part in activities such as trekking, mountain biking, jeep and photo safaris, as well as various water sports.
