Producers are working to protect the Hüyük strawberry from the cold in the Konya Plain and to keep up with harvest demands, as orders have increased following its geographical indication registration by the European Union. The strawberry, now in high demand, reaches its peak quality in the autumn season.
In the Konya Plain, producers are busy harvesting the Hüyük strawberry, which stands out for its flavor and aroma due to its unique geographical and climatic conditions. They aim to harvest it at its peak quality.
Following its geographical indication registration by the European Union (EU), the demand for the strawberry has surged in both domestic and international markets. Growers are now facing the most challenging and intensive period of the year in production.
In the autumn season, the significant difference between day and night temperatures enhances the strawberry's aroma, sugar content, and firmness beyond standard levels, while its vibrant color further adds to its value.
During its most valuable season, producers work to maximize output by combating frost risk. They cover their fields before evening to protect the strawberries, then uncover them in the morning as temperatures rise, beginning their day's work.
Alongside the efforts of local women working to fulfill orders, the strawberries are carefully harvested to preserve their quality. Based on demand, the fruits are then sorted for industrial use, table consumption, or export before being dispatched.
Sıraç Orhan, the manager of the fresh fruit processing facility in the district, stated that they are working to meet the demand from European countries, particularly France and Germany.
Orhan noted that they entered a busy period at the beginning of October, describing this as the most valuable time for both producers and industrialists.
He emphasized that factories are in a race to secure the strawberries produced during this period, saying, "The frost causes the strawberry's dry matter and sugar content to reach their highest levels. So right now, the strawberries are at their most delicious. Additionally, their durability increases. They can be sent fresh all the way to Norway without needing to be frozen. This is also the most valuable time for the farmers. During this period, the price can reach three-digit figures."
