Meram’s Transformation Story Brought to the Screen

The documentary The Story of Suriçi, which tells the 22-year journey of the Suriçi Bazaar Urban Transformation Project implemented by Meram Municipality, premiered at a special gala event. Revealing the story behind one of Konya’s most significant urban transformation projects and its role in preserving the city’s historical heritage, the film received widespread praise and applause from attendees.

The gala screening of The Story of Suriçi, a documentary chronicling the development of the Suriçi Bazaar Urban Transformation Project—one of Meram Municipality’s flagship initiatives that has revitalized Konya’s historic center—was held with strong participation. The program began with the screening of the documentary, which portrays the restoration of one of the city’s most historic districts and showcases 22 years of dedication and effort. The film was met with prolonged applause and appreciation from the audience. Beyond documenting an urban transformation project, the documentary captured a city’s collective memory, perseverance, and hopes for the future.

Speaking after the screening, Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş emphasized that Suriçi Bazaar was far more than an ordinary urban transformation project. He said the documentary tells the story of how a great vision became reality, helping to restore the spirit of Konya. Recalling that Şükran Neighborhood and its surroundings had gradually lost many of their historical and cultural values over the years, Mayor Kavuş noted that the Suriçi Bazaar Urban Transformation Project had brought this forgotten heritage back to life while revitalizing social and commercial activity in the area.

Stating that every frame of the documentary reflects 22 years of hard work, patience, determination, and perseverance, Mayor Kavuş said that despite numerous challenges, the project ultimately produced a lasting landmark that enriches Konya’s skyline and will serve as a legacy for future generations.

Following the speeches, guests gathered for commemorative photographs to mark the occasion and celebrate the remarkable story of Suriçi, which has once again become a vibrant part of life in the heart of Konya.
