The Historical Serafeddin Mosque in Konya

The Historical Serafeddin Mosque in Konya

The Serafeddin Mosque was originally built in the 12th century by Sheikh Serafeddin in Konya. It was repaired in 1444 by İbrahim Bey II of the Karamanids. Over time, the mosque fell into disrepair and was completely demolished and rebuilt in 1636 by Mehmed Çavuşoğlu Memi Bey.

The main structure is built from finely cut stone and is covered by a large central dome. This dome is supported on the south side by a semi-dome, which also covers the projecting mihrab section. Apart from the southern side, there are upper galleries (mahfils) on the other three sides. The interior is adorned with elegant examples of Islamic calligraphy and intricate hand-painted decorations. The marble-crafted minbar (pulpit) and mihrab (prayer niche) are considered remarkable works of art.

At the front of the mosque is a forecourt (last congregation area) covered with seven domes. The single-balconied minaret was added at a later date. On the southern façade once stood the tomb of Sheikh Şerafeddin, which was demolished in the early 20th century. It was rebuilt in 2010 by the Regional Directorate of Foundations in accordance with its original design.
